‘The First of Me’ Cinematic Music Montage

EDIT: The complete version is now finished and online. Check it out by clicking the links below!

This last week I had the pleasure of working and filming with the acting talents of Steven Bristow, a personal friend of mine and fellow student. The following video (as mentioned in a previous post) took approximately 5 hours of actual filming at various locations and then many, many hours of editing in addition to that. This was hard work, so I have a renewed appreciation for those in the industry!

You can play the video in the embedded dock below or click the “Vimeo” button to view a larger, high-definition version.

The purpose of the video is to serve essentially as eye-candy made interesting by the actor(s) and the music. I sought to film this in a professional, cinematic manner, utilizing a speed of 24 progressive frames per second with rich, dark video coloring. The story is roughly represented as a young man facing some tough decisions.

Video footage was shot with a Canon Vixia HV30 high-definition camera using the stock 43mm lens and an IRV manual focus ring @ 24 fps in cinema mode, with lens hood + neutral density filter, and a Velbon DV7000 tripod (only in the smooth panning shots… a good portion of the video was done free-handed). Video footage captured/pulldown removed with Cineform Neoscene, edited in Sony Vegas Pro 8 and colorized with a Magic Bullet plugin.

The occasional/strategic blurriness, occasional camera “shakiness” in some scenes, and the darker, surreal coloring are all intentional artistic attributes of the video. Also, the actor is not supposed to be lip-synching in every scene (i.e. intended to go from voice to his own thoughts and/or ambience of the video scenes). This was my very first real attempt at video with the HV30 (and decent videography at all in fact), so please feel free to leave your comments! A primary goal of this video was to present it with professional, cinematic visuals.
