CleverNever

6 May 2011

Recently a friend of mine launched CleverNever.com, a fun little web site where users can post humorous answers to a new question every few days.

Logging in is a snap; simply click the sign in link and you’ll be signed in seamlessly via Facebook, without the need to remember yet another username or password. Take a look and try to post the answer that gets the most votes. Rumor has it that winners receive a prize.

Keep in mind though it is more or less in beta testing, so even if it seems quirky or outdated at times it is not dead!

The Computer’s Gender

28 January 2011

One day a Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.
“House,” she declared, is feminine: la casa.
“Pencil,” however, is masculine: el lapiz.
A student then asked, “What gender is ‘computer’?”

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether “computer” should be a masculine or a feminine noun.

The men’s group decided that “computer” should definitely be of the feminine gender (la computadora), because:

1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.

2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is impossible to understand for everyone else.

3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval.

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

The women’s group concluded that computers should be masculine (el computador), because:

1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on.

2. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves.

3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are the problem.

4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer you could have gotten a better model.

Of course, the Spanish knew what they were doing when they made ‘computer’ a feminine noun, la computadora!

Thoughts on ‘Inception’

29 July 2010

Recently I went and watched the movie Inception after hearing so many positive reviews about it. It certainly is an excellent film, mostly because it forces you to pay attention, but is at the same time not so confusing that it neglects your interest. The visual effects are stunning and the acting is very well done. The explanations of how dreams work inside the movie make a lot of sense! Furthermore I want to discuss some of my opinions about the actual storyline as opposed to the movie, so spoiler alert if you haven’t seen it yet! Please feel free to leave your comments and discuss your own opinions of the movie!

So about the ending… was Cobb still dreaming or not? My personal take is that he had indeed woken up for real on the plane and finally met his goal. At the same time, I can definitely see why others might think differently, and as far as I’ve seen on web polls, the opinion is split right about even. I think it was intentional that director Christopher Nolan wanted the viewers to be unsure either way… perhaps to the point that inception had been performed on our own minds!

Moving on, the top spinning at the end seemed to wobble, unlike earlier scenes where it had moved fluidly without any hint of falling. Just the same, it appears that Cobb didn’t really care at the point that he saw his children’s faces, but it would not make sense that he would want to be satisfied with another dream world. When facing the spectre of his wife in the deepest dream of their adventure, he told her that a shade of his real wife would never suffice. She was not present at the end, which supports the idea that he is awake, although for all we know she could show up again (sequel, anyone?). The individuals in the airport did not seem to exhibit any odd behavior worthy of dream projections. The children seemed to be a little aged, but I at least could not tell for sure. We as viewers don’t know how long he was away from home, a piece of information which would certainly help to determine the truth!

Whatever the actuality, Inception is a brilliant movie worthy of your attention.
