AT&T / iPhone Woes

25 September 2009

So today Apple and AT&T Wireless unveiled a long-awaited feature for the iPhone that honestly should have been included on the original unit when it came out in June 2007: MMS (picture/multimedia messaging)! Wow, great. To quote one of my roommates, ”Welcome to 1999, Apple and AT&T.” My first cell phone back around 2001 had picture messaging, and my next one after that could record video.

To those who may not know, originally when iPhone users would receive a picture message, they would get a text message with a link, ID and password (complicated ones, no doubt) that had to be entered in on a webpage via the phone’s Safari web browser. When firmware 3.0 came out not long ago, everyone was excited because picture messaging capability was announced. But alas, U.S. subscribers had to wait more long months so that AT&T could try and get its act together to handle the new stress load on their network. With spotty service as it is, I still fear what might happen despite their improvements.

So, even though we iPhone users now have the age-old staple of real picture messaging, with as much as this phone and its data plan costs, you’d think there would be some other features along for the ride, too. How about a basic video recorder for the iPhone 3G? I know it can handle it, because hacked firmware allows you to install a video recorder app, and I’ve even seen it work on an original iPhone. How about data tethering already? As of this article we’re still waiting on that (at least officially).

Don’t get me wrong. I do love my iPhone 3G and all of the cool things it lets me do on-the-go, but it is capable of so much more! Don’t let us down, Apple and AT&T, or a Google-based phone might be my next one.

iPhone 3G

7 August 2008

You’ve probably already heard and read a ton of comments and reviews on this new phone available from Apple with service from AT&T Wireless, but I’d like to add my voice to that bunch. If you don’t know what the iPhone is, click here to learn more. In a nutshell, the iPhone is an absolute all-in-one entertainment/enterprise computer phone with an impressive array of features (including an amazing finger-touch interface) barely matched, if at all, by any other current phone. The ‘iPhone 3G’ is the next-gen upgrade to the original iPhone released in 2007.

iPhone 3G

For the most part, I absolutely love this device. I was somewhat interested in the original iPhone but the new model finally tipped the scale for me and even caused me to switch from Verizon to AT&T. If you’ve been reading my posts for a while you already know how much I dislike Apple, Inc. as a company (due to some of their controlling practices), but with this device I think they actually did something semi-right!

The upgraded model was released in July 2008 featuring “3G” data/internet speed among other various changes and improvements, including a dramatically reduced price (with 2-year contract). The increased data speed allows for faster downloads and internet loading in areas with coverage. When 3G is not available, the AT&T’s 2G ’Edge’ network takes over for acceptable speed. Other upgrades with the 3G model include a new-style black or white backplate (in addition to some other cosmetic changes), slightly improved call quality, enhanced GPS hardware, the addition of the 2.0 firmware (adding some cool features even to the original iPhone), and more.

With the iPhone 3G I literally have the world in my pocket. The device features Safari, a Mac-based full internet browser that integrates wonderfully well with the touch and zoom interface. Many other native tools are included such as a a full featured iPod Touch, world clock, YouTube search/viewer, scientific calculator, integrated webmail access, calendar, Google Maps/GPS, stocks, weather, camera/photos, SMS texting with messages shown in conversation format, and countless others. The ‘App Store’ is also included which features on-the-go access to thousands of both free and priced applications by third-party developers, which can be reviewed by users beforehand and seamlessly installed/uninstalled at will. The potential of this phone is virtually limitless.

The phone does have its setbacks, however, as it cannot currently do picture/video messaging, voice dialing, or record video, but these can (and in some cases already have been) fixed by downloadable applications. Some users may elect to ‘unlock’ the phone, which allows for usage of the phone on other SIM-card based phone carriers such as T-Mobile and usage of unnofficial programs, some of which have already added the above features, but unlocking it will void the phone’s 1-year warranty (though this doesn’t seem to bother the majority of unlockers).

There really is nothing cooler than being on a road trip (with someone else driving, of course!) and being able to listen to my favorite songs while at the very same time checking my e-mail, stocks, Facebook profile, answering calls, and even writing blog posts… all with my fingertips! If you have already been thinking of getting an iPhone, now is the time to cross the bridge and upgrade with the new 3G model. The original one is basically the same though, so if you can find one of those cheaper on eBay or elsewhere, it is a good choice as well.

Finally the world is getting a real taste of all-in-one tech sweetness!

Fruitful Fascism

20 May 2008

You’ve all seen the ads and bloated hype. Apple, Inc. thinks it is pretty hot stuff these days. How do I as a computer user interpret all this? Enough already! We all know you dominate the fringe and fanboy market well enough. Yes, we know you sell the iPod, iPhone, Mac this and Mac that, but hopefully you will stay an underdog for a very long time.

I’ll admit, I do admire Apple’s creativity and marketing tactics. They are pretty effective in getting their message accross for the most part, even if it is based on unwarranted bias (though some of their products are good for certain artists). They can even get you to purchase a product that is inferior to other, cheaper ones, because they make you think they’re the best (example, many digital audio players have had more features and open accessibility than iPods for years)! Macs are not perfect machines, the ”Alpha and Omega,” or the one-stop solution (well, unless you want your wallet unjustifiably cleared with bloated prices). They have problems too, just like Windows and Linux-based PCs.

Another thing I dislike about Apple is their controlling, manipulative manner. In this regard they are far worse than Microsoft. Want to add a song to your iPoo? You must use our software and give us detailed personal information, or else. Want to buy a song? Sorry, we want you to think that the expensive iTunes store is the only source! Dreaming of building your own Mac or using our software on hardware not manufactured or licensed by us? Nope, too bad. Got a problem and valid complaint about our software (*cough* original Leopard OS copy/paste bug)? Your comments will be blocked and deleted from our message boards as you are mercilessly assailed by Mac fanboys. Thank you and have a nice day.

These are just a few of my complaints against the somewhat fascist company that names itself after perfectly good fruit. You know why their apple logo has a bite taken out of it? Because it is the evil witch’s poisoned apple that takes over your mind and wipes it of all tech common sense!

May free open-source live forever!

NOTE: Please comment on this and any other article! I greatly welcome debate and other discussion!
